What are they for?
These three balms each have a different focus. All are lick-safe and hypoallergenic.
The PAW WAX is for everyday use for most dog owners. This is a balance of moisturizing, nourishing ingredients with protective, shielding waxes and butters. The product has a very mild, pleasant smell.
If walking on pavement gives your dog dryness and little cracks around the edges of the paw pads, this wax will soothe and protect. If temperatures outdoors are hot or cold, this wax will offer protection. (Note: If you want to walk your dog on scorching pavement, you’ll need to use dog boots. But wax is helpful with some of the issues dog boots have in heat or snow.) Paw wax also protects against chemicals put down for snow and ice. Always be sure to clean the dog’s feet upon return home when salts are on the pavement.
Dog paw pads are tough, and will respond well to conditioning.
Note: beeswax reactions are extremely rare, even for those with bee allergies, so beeswax is considered hypoallergenic. If your dog has a serious bee allergy, I would still check with your vet.
The PET BALM is formulated to effectively but gently nourish and moisturize pet’s paw pads, noses, and any bare spots. The very mild scent won’t upset pets if applied to noses.
The balm is unlikely to attract pet’s attention much, due to the quick absorption and benign odor. A little distraction may be enough to prevent licking. Otherwise, when used on paws, an old pair of socks over the paws can be helpful. I use the balm on Pippa–who has allergies. If she rubs her fur off her side trying to create a hot spot, I apply some balm and then dress her in an old flannel shirt to prevent any scratching. The balm soothes her and she grows the fur right back.
Frolicsome balm is safe for cats. The vets I have asked have said they see no reason why it can’t be used on other animals such as ferrets, bunnies, guinea pigs, horses, what-have-you, even on bird legs, but I have yet to find a vet who can tell me for certain that the specific ingredients are documented as safe for any other animals. I’m still looking for that verification. I have researched carefully to make sure my balms are safe for dogs and cats.
Be careful: Some pet products include ingredients which are questionable or even toxic to dogs or cats when licked, such as lavender or essential oils. Aloe is only safe for animals if it is FOOD GRADE aloe vera. Be aware that “white oil” is another word for mineral oil.
The HIKERS WAX is designed to supply protection. It does what the above paw wax does, but is wholly focused on shielding the paws and giving lasting protection. It helps protect paw pads from rough granite and long walks over varied terrain. Use also on the hair between the pads to effectively protect against ice balls forming. The product has a neutral smell in order not to attract large predators. Including container, the 2 oz size weighs only 3.5 oz. Through-hikers will probably want to apply the wax in the morning and evening each day.

Ingredients. PLEASE NOTE:
All of my ingredients are carefully sourced. I make every effort to locate suppliers who carry ethical, sustainable, Fair Trade and organic products. My beeswax is from Marie’s Bees, Bellingham, WA.(Bees have up to an eight-mile range, so even if the local fields where they spend their time are organic, beeswax is very difficult to certify or label as organic.)
Shea butter– The words “raw” and “unrefined” are often used to describe chemically extracted and industrially processed shea butter. This accounts for approximately 85% of shea butter produced. The shea butter we use is HANDCRAFTED and TRADITIONALLY MADE (as an important social activity), benefiting the collective of women who work with it in Africa.
All packaging of my products is reusable and/or curbside recyclable.
The product may melt in direct sunlight, say, on a car dashboard. Even if liquefied, it won’t harm the product. Just place it in a cool place to harden. A dented can could leak if wax is quite liquid.
