Dogs get sunburn too, and are vulnerable to skin cancer and other serious issues. I haven’t been able to find a sunscreen for dog ears and noses that doesn’t contain harmful ingredients. So, I created a sun protectant balm.
Sun screen meant for humans isn’t an option. While Zinc Oxide is actually beneficial, in reasonable amounts, to humans–it is TOXIC to dogs. Don’t let your puppy lick that child covered in sunscreen!
Even so-called “natural” sunscreens for dogs are full of unsafe chemicals. I haven’t been able to find any that are free of ingredients harmful to dogs and/or the ecosystem. Oxybenzone, while perhaps not a problem for dogs, is harmful to the environment. It is banned in many places because it is a threat to wildlife, coral reefs and seagrass habitats.
“Studies also find oxybenzone, octocrylene and octinoxate in many water sources around the world, from which they are not easily removed. These chemicals are also known to be present in various species of fish around the world, which researchers worry could affect the food chain.” ¹
Most dogs need protection when in sunny alpine areas or at the beach.
Certain breeds (including Dalmatians, Collies, & Bulldogs) need to be protected when outside for an afternoon. More info here.
Frolicsome Sun Balm is made only with truly natural ingredients that are beneficial to the health of your dog. It is a moisturizing sun protectant. It isn’t as much of a sunblock as a Zinc Oxide sunscreen for humans, but it does help protect your pet. Test on a small area first- reactions are highly unlikely, but like humans, dogs can have a reaction to any substance.

As with all my products: Everything is heavily researched and is tested. Ingredients are accepted ingredients commonly used for the purpose and are safe for dogs. Use at your own risk.
The sun balm comes in a TSA-approved reusable tube. The body of the tube is silicone, dishwasher safe. The product can be quite liquidy and looks clear on the skin. It has a stronger smell than my other balms-an earthy, clay smell.
The 3oz amount costs the same as my 2oz balms. There is room in the tube to allow for expansion in flight. These tubes are designed not to leak from pressure changes, and I have not been informed of any issues. To be extra safe, I recommend sealing the balm in a zippered sandwich bag to contain any leakage when traveling.
